These practitioners represent the highest level of achievement for Heilkunstlers. They are full members of, and are certified by, the International Heilkunst Association (IHA) and are committed to their own continuing education and training, and to a code of ethics. As such, they are entitled to use the designation, Doctor of Medical Heilkunst (DMH) or Doctor of Veterinary Heilkunst (DVH) after their name. This designation provides you with assurance that the practitioner is fully knowledgeable and trained in the latest developments of Heilkunst on a continuing basis.

Patty Smith has been interested in homeopathy since her first introduction in 1977. When her father was admitted to Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia for a triple coronary bypass, she already was suggesting alternative treatment (and reading, at that time, Dr. Robert Mendelsohn's Confessions of a Medical Heretic and The Pritikin Program by Dr. Nathan Pritikin). Following her father's surgery there was a medical snafu, putting him into a coma for five months before he died at Christmas, 1980.

As a teenager, I remember being fascinated by different methods of healing and read anything I could get my hands on relating to herbs, nutrition, reflexology, etc. This interest was put aside while I attended University, started teaching, got married and had children. Growing up, I was no stranger to the Doctor's office. I was continually using cortisone cream for skin rashes, an inhaler for asthma or antibiotics for skin or ear infections. I loved it when my parents would use poultices and other natural therapies on me that they had learned from their parents or grandparents - it was all so intriguing to me. Patty lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She taught in a Montessori preschool for nine years. During her teaching years, she realized that too many children were put on antibiotics for repeated ear infections. Frances, born in Ontario shortly after her parents moved to Canada from Holland, was raised on a dairy farm where she grew organic vegetables, fruit, dairy, meat, and wild berries. She never visited the doctor or dentist unless absolutely necessary as her parents did not depend on them. Her parents always tried to let nature take it's course first. They would go to the forest and pick shrubs, boil them and make teas; these were used to treat first aid situations like sore throats, kankers and cuts, and would be used with everyone on the farm, including the dairy cattle and pets. Today she is grateful for the foundation her parents gave her, which was all in preparation for who she is today. They planted the seed which helped her to think laterally and see things 'outside the box'.

Wendy’s journey with complimentary medicine began in 1990 when she began to search for ways to treat her asthma without inhalers and steroid pills. While she was able to achieve some reduction of the symptoms, after a few years of improved health it became clear that the underlying cause of her asthma had not been eliminated. Having children was a trigger for a new set of symptoms – eczema, chronic fatigue and hypothyroid. While conventional medicine confirmed that eczema and asthma are typically caused by the same underlying factors, the only suggestions for treatment were drugs and cortisone creams. Having used these medicines since she was a child, Wendy understood that they were not solving the problem – they were only suppressing the symptoms and were ultimately causing her health to deteriorate.
